Dawoodi Bohras in East Africa -Largest Religious Congregation (Ashara Mubaraka 1438) in over three decades

The city will be host to the largest religious congregation in over three decades

Ashara Mubaraka are the first 10 days of Moharram, that mark the martyrdom of Imam Husain AS, grandson of Prophet Mohammed SAW, that took place fourteen centuries ago. This is a very important religious and spiritual event in the Dawoodi Bohra Calendar. Each year, Dawoodi Bohras across the world observe Ashara Mubaraka by attending religious sermons, mourning the tragedy of Karbala and remembering the supreme sacrifice of Imam Husain AS.

Imam Husain AS refused to pledge allegiance to Yazeed, a tyrannical ruler who had transgressed all that Islam stood for and had established a reign of oppression after coming to power. In the battle of Karbala, Imam Husain AS along with seventy two of his followers including his family fought bravely on the scorching sands of Karbala and acquired martyrdom. The oppressors had totally denied them food and water for 3 consecutive days and even Imam Husain AS’s six month old son was martyred in the battlefield of Karbala. Imam Husain AS made this supreme sacrifice so that truth may prevail, tyranny be exterminated and the cherished human values of righteousness, piety and virtue may ever remain supreme and uncompromising.

Following the footsteps of his predecessors, each year, 53rd al-Dai al-Mutlaq, His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS,on receiving requests and invitations from his followers from different towns and cities, chooses a venue for delivering sermons during Ashara Mubaraka. In this Islamic year, 1438 H, the city of Dar es Salaam is blessed to have been chosen as the venue for Ashara Mubaraka, which will be from the 2nd to the 11th of October, 2016.

With the encouragement and blessings of His Holiness’ predecessors, a few Dawoodi Bohras made their homes in Tanzania more than two centuries ago. They came here principally to carry on business and trade. Finding the country a land of opportunities and experiencing the welcoming nature of the Tanzanians, they subsequently settled and made their homes in Tanzania. The Dawoodi Bohras of Tanzania and those of Dar es Salaam, in particular feel extremely privileged to host this event and expect to host about 30,000 guests from all over the world including East Africa.

During Ashara Mubaraka sermons, His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS will narrate the tragic events of Karbala and shower pearls of wisdom upon his followers, mentoring them on the noble teachings of Islam and the principles of humanity that Imam Husain AS sacrificed his life for. During these auspicious days, His Holiness will pray for the victims of the earthquake in Kagera region. His Holiness and his followers, the Dawoodi Bohra community, offer support and help to the efforts of the Government of Tanzania in rebuilding and providing relief to the victims of the earthquake in Kagera region. It is also the intention and desire of Anjuman-e-Saifee (Dar es Salaam) to launch a scheme for the support of those affected by the calamity.

Wherever he travels, His Holiness reminds his loyal followers of the noble teachings of Islam that “love for the land of abode is an essential part of the faith” and that “religion is not just prayer and fast but also to strive for betterment in this world and hereafter”. He guides them to strive for the betterment of their neighbors and for the common good of all the people of their country. His Holiness guides and directs his followers to invest in trade and industry in Tanzania and has dedicated resources to assist them to work hand in hand with other members of the society and for the country at large. Following the guidance and directions of His Holiness, the Dawoodi Bohras residing in Tanzania continue to contribute to the growth and development of their country.

The anticipated arrival of His Holiness to Dar es Salaam is on Tuesday, 27th September at 1300 Hrs.

Importance of attending Ashara Mubaraka Waaz from 2nd Moharram

Personal Experience of one Mumin
dawoodi bohra

In every bayaan, Mufaddal Maula TUS is emphasising the importance of zikr Hussain AS and attendance of waaz majlis regularly from 2nd Moharram, come what may. So much so that recently he said “Mein wajib karun chhun”. Parents often worry about their children’s education and schools not granting leave, and Maula specifically addresses such concerns with ” je thatu hoye thawa do”. I would like to share my personal experience in the hope that it removes any such fears parents may still have, and convince them that Maula knows what is best for us, and when he himself is taking responsibility, rest assured the outcome will be better than we can imagine.
In 1417H/1997 I was a student in 7th standard in BVS Parsi High School, one of the oldest schools in Karachi, Pakistan with a reputation for its academic standards, merit and strict discipline, when Muqaddas Maula, Syedna Muhammad Burhanuddin RA gave the sharaf of Ashara Mubaraka to Karachi. It was common knowledge among Bohra students, that is was pointless asking for leave, as it would certainly be denied, and consequences then of staying absent would be worse. With my mother’s consent I decided to stay absent for the week and deal with it later. When the time came to go back to school with a note of excuse, with strength and courage from Imam Hussain and his Dai, I decided to be honest. It would have been an easy way out to have a doctor’s note and make illness an excuse, but at that time it didn’t feel right.

The day could not have gone worse. I was told by my class teacher to get the note signed by the principal, whose sight used to scare me. The principal asked me the reason, and I think I had just uttered ‘Moharram’, when she burst out, saying she was sick of us Bohra students, and told me to get out and tell my parents to collect my leaving certificate. I was not allowed to sit in class that day and spent the whole day sitting outside in the grounds, crying, scared and not knowing what to do. The next day it was my parents’ turn. I was not inside, but the gist of the conversation was that my parents were not serious about my education, they were too lenient with me, and that I would have to leave school at the end of the year. Technically, that meant I was let off with a warning. But I was so upset that I refused to continue and convinced my parents to get me admitted to another school. There was a new school that had opened a few years earlier and was yet to pass out its first batch. Admissions were open and the test was scheduled in the near future. We signed up, I got admitted that same session without wasting a year. This new school followed the Cambridge O’level system as opposed to the local matriculation system followed by BVS. The blessings had already started. In 5 years, third batch from the school, I passed with flying colors, topped in school, from an internationally accredited system, went on to do A’levels from another top school in Karachi, followed by Engineering from USA and Masters from Australia.
Today I have a 3 year old son, and I Azm that I will never let education interfere with Ashara Mubaraka waaz and zikr Hussain, because that is the true education that holds us together in this world and prepares us for the next. The rest as they say is history.
